What brokerage platform should I use?

Consider platforms such as TD Ameritrade, Webull, Robinhood, E-Trade, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Think or Swim, Interactive Brokers, TradeStation, etc. There are more brokers available, these are just some to start out with. However, some brokers are not commission free when making trades. Find the best fit for you.

Some penny (OTC) stocks I want to trade aren’t available on all platforms. Where do I find them to trade?

TD Ameritrade is your best bet for those OTC (over the counter) penny stocks. Keep in mind that penny stocks can be extremely volatile when trading. Trade at your own risk.

Where can I trade during Pre-Market or After Hours?

Webull has the best timing for both PM & AH (4 hours for both PM & AH). Most platforms offer some form of extended-hours trading but the general consensus is that Webull has the largest time window.

What is the Pattern Day Trader (PDT) Rule?

Under the rules, a pattern day trader must maintain minimum equity of $25,000 on any day that the customer day trades. The required minimum equity must be in the account prior to any day-trading activities. If the account falls below the $25,000 requirement, the pattern day trader will not be permitted to day trade until the account is restored to the $25,000 minimum equity level.

What is a Pattern Day Trader?

Any margin customer that day trades (buys then sells or sells short then buys the same security on the same day) four or more times in a sliding five business day window, provided the number of day trades are more than six percent of the customer’s total trading activity for that same five-day period.

What is a day trade?

Day trading refers to buying then selling or selling short then buying the same security on the same day. Just purchasing a security, without selling it later that same day, would not be considered a day trade.

What happens if I am marked as a Pattern Day Trader?

If you are marked as a PDT and you don’t have an equity greater than or equal to $25,000, your account will be restricted from day trading for 90 days or until you raise your equity to $25,000.

Are there any ways to get around the PDT Rule and day trade more often?

Yes. You can switch to a cash account, use peer-to-peer brokerage, or use an offshore brokerage (PDT rule only applies to brokerages based inside of the United States).

What are the different order types?

Market Order
A market order is an order that buys/sells shares at best available price. This order type is heavily prone to slippage due to market prices staying in a constant state of flux. If the price rises or falls while your order is being filled you will buy/sell some shares at a different price that you may have expected. This is usually the default order type for brokerages.

Stop Order
A stop order can be used to get in/out of a position at a set price. Once the price reaches the stop’s price level, your order will be converted into a market order. Since your order turns into a market order, it is also prone to slippage. If the price never reaches the stop then your order will not be executed.

Limit Order
A limit order can get you in/out of a position but unlike a stop order or a market order, it prevents any unfavorable slippage. Limit orders ensure your order will get filled at your specified price or at a better price. If the price never reaches the limit then your order will not be executed.

Stop-Limit Order
A stop-limit combines both a stop order and a limit order to specify a price range that you are willing to buy/sell at. The stop is the point where the order is triggered. The order then becomes a market order and the stop becomes a limit order. Since the price is in between two limit orders, the order will only be filled while in between the two limits
